Understory is a small-scale plant nursery in Northern New Mexico.
Understory grows native, medicinal, and dryland plants attuned to the river valleys and uplands of Northern New Mexico.
Beyond the nursery, we create opportunities to learn from the land, share knowledge, and deepen our relationship with the places we live.
We believe these connections grow through observation, memory, and lived experience. It is a story continually unfolding.

Understory was started by Ash Haywood whose background spans nearly two decades of farming, learning from the ecology of Northern New Mexico, and working with local communities through agriculture, youth mentorship, and multimedia storytelling projects.
Through its nursery, workshops, and community projects, Understory centers the knowledge, stories, and relationships that connect people to plants & their places.
