Connect &
Grow With Us
Understory grows through relationships.
We welcome you to take part in our work from helping tend plants in the nursery to sharing knowledge, land, seeds, and stories with our community.
We’re interested in connecting with people who want to care for the places we call home.
Help grow the nursery
Join us on designated days throughout the year to connect with one another, learn from the plants, and help with the seasonal work of the nursery.
Volunteer days may include:
sowing seeds and potting-up
seed cleaning
organizing and caring for plants
preparing plants and materials for market
other seasonal nursery tasks
Teach, lead, or share what you know
Do you have knowledge, skills, and experience connected to plants, gardens, farming, seeds, ecology, or a creative practice? You don't need to have a formal teaching background. We would love to include you in our programs engaging youth and community members in
a nature / plant based class or workshop
a plant walk
seed-saving or propagation
gardening or farming
foodways or herbal knowledge
ecological observation
storytelling or oral history
photography, writing, film, or sound
another form of place-based learning
Growing and Learning From Place
We’re looking to build relationships with farmers, gardeners, landowners, community gardens, and other land-based projects interested in creating opportunities for growing and learning. We’re especially interested in places where plants can be grown, observed, and cared for over multiple seasons.
Land partnerships might support us to engage youth and communities in:
transplanting and growing plants for seed
native plant demonstration gardens
regional food and medicinal crops
seasonal plant and pollinator observation
community learning and field visits
seed collection, where appropriate and with permission
documenting plants and ecological change over time
Help Understory grow
Understory is a small, growing project. Financial support helps us purchase seeds and supplies, maintain nursery infrastructure, offer community programming, and make participation more accessible.
Your support helps create opportunities for people to grow plants, support pollinators and ecological health, share knowledge, and build a deeper relationship with plants and place.
Have another idea?
We’d love to hear from you.
