Rumex hymenosepalus — Sand Dock

from $8.00

Sun: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly; dry to moderately dry
Height: 1–3 feet
Bloom: March–May

A distinctive Southwestern dock with broad, sometimes wavy leaves and reddish stems that rise from a low basal rosette. Sand Dock is a plant of sandy flats, washes, grasslands, and river valleys, with deep tuberous roots that help it withstand dry conditions. As the small spring flowers fade, the papery seed coverings turn pink to red, giving the plant an unexpected flush of color. Its roots have also long been valued as a source of natural dye.
